I don't know about the veracity of the expository text on this Youtube video of the first part of Mozart's Requiem - but it is interesting....
I favor the Oxford comma. I think the Wikipedia example for and against the Oxford comma is hilarious:
Resolving ambiguity
Use of the serial comma can sometimes remove ambiguity. Consider an apocryphal book dedication:
- To my parents, Ayn Rand and God.
There is ambiguity about the writer's parentage, because Ayn Rand and God can be read as in apposition to my parents, leading the reader to believe that the writer refers to Ayn Rand and God as his or her parents. A comma before and removes the ambiguity:
- To my parents, Ayn Rand, and God.
And Oxford comma is also a great track off the new Vampire Weekend self titled album:
It is cold and rainy in Los Angeles. It is also cold everywhere in the U.S. - so this is global warming?
This song is so jaunty - but the lyrics kind of make me feel like I am late for a flight or something. Minus the vocals, it would be a fun song. With the vocals, its sort of anxiety inducing (in a good way, not all stress is bad.)
